There are a few rare socketables that can be obtained from fishing. Chaos gems cannot be upgraded by Duran the Transmuter. A chaos gem is always rewarded by Vasman's first quest. The following is a list of socketable gems.Ĭhaos gems are relatively rare and have more or less random magical properties. Gems may be removed from sockets by Gorn and Furl, two NPCs in town who can either destroy a piece of equipment to recover gems, or destroy gems to free up sockets in a piece of equipment. Rings and trinkets may be included in transmuting a gem. Set pieces (purple quality items) may only be transmuted if their icon's color is the same, even if they are all really purple quality. Gems can also be transmuted with four items of the same quality. Gems may be upgraded by Duran the Transmuter, who can combine two gems of the same type and quality into a gem of the next higher level of quality (with the exception of chaos gems, which cannot be transmuted).
Items can either come pre-socketed, or can randomly have sockets added through the enchanting system. Socketed items allow players to add gems to items, providing them with additional bonuses such as increased resistance or ability to steal HP on attack. Gems are socketable items in Torchlight, most of which are some form of Ember.
